Sue Donaldson, manager at the care home, said: "It was our privilege to look after her. The staff at the home will certainly miss her very much."

Mrs Turnbull who died on Friday two weeks before her 112th birthday on 21 September was brought up in Stoneyburn, West Lothian, before she moved to Edinburgh after leaving school at the age of 14.

During her working life Mrs Turnbull was a housekeeper.

Her daughter Margaret Pat-erson, 77, said: "She didn't like to make a fuss. Everybody that knew her had a good word to say about her. You can make a lot of friends in 111 years. She was a wonderful woman and while she lived to a marvellous age, the years always failed to show."

A service will be held at Seafield Crematorium in Edinburgh on Saturday.
