Letter: The right step

I AGREE with Hazel Forsyth's comments (Letters 7 February) regarding the preposterous views put forward by doctors Fischbacher, McCartney, Lowther and Professor Morris against plans to construct an escalator at long last in Waverley Station.

As a long-suffering rail commuter of 20 years or so, I hated the daily climb and descent on the Waverley Steps.

I wonder how many times these learned gentlemen have had to go up and down this 19th century endurance test? I wonder, too, if they have seen people, as I have over the years, really struggling to the point of exhaustion? I, and thousands more, will welcome Network Rail's plans for the upgrade.
