Golf: Saltman makes cut for q-school stage two

CRAIGIELAW golfer Lloyd Saltman completed a good week's work by progressing past stage one of the European Tour's qualifying school, writes nick rodger.

The Aegon-backed golfer, who headed for the 72-hole shoot-out at Wychwood Park, near Crewe, straight from a top-ten finish on the Challenge Tour in Russia last Sunday, could even afford the luxury of an over-par finish and stll qualified with ease.

Saltman signed off with a two-over 74 for a two-under 286 but comfortably made the grade in a share of eighth behind Englishman James Heath, who topped the standings on 281.

The former Open silver medal winner will now head for Spain in November for stage two of the q-school marathon.

Elgin's Joel Hendry also grabbed one of the 28 stage two places on offer with a 288 after a 71.

Ross Bain, the top Scot in the 2007 Open, also had a 71 and squeezed through on the 291 limit.
