Hockey: Inverleith pull clear in race for title

INVERLEITH moved three points clear of the chasing pack in the race for Scotland's indoor hockey title after two punishing weekend clashes with seven-time champions Menzieshill.

And it could have been six points had Chris Wilson not netted seconds from time to level at 3-3 in yesterday's second clash, the Dundee side coming from 3-1 down to snatch a point.

On Saturday, Inverleith humbled the defending champions 7-1, but Menzieshill came out fighting yesterday at Perth.

A double from Scottish international Chris Grassick and a single from Olympian Graham Moodie were countered by a double from Menzieshill's experienced player Kerr Thomson.

That set up a grandstand finish and Wilson netted controversially. Fife-based Stuart Neave, Inverleith's coach, said: "We've put ourselves in a good position." Neave, however, suffered a major set-back and will have to count Scottish international Andrew Sinclair out of the rest of the indoor campaign after the Edinburgh-born star broke his leg in a fall during Saturday's game.
